* Nació el 11 de junio de 1959 en Oxford y alli creció y vivió durante toda su infancia.
* Es el menor de cuatro hermanos (dos varones y dos mujeres)
* Su padre el Dr. William George Ranald Mundell Laurie, medico y medallista olimpico en la
especialidad remo (1915 -1999), su madre Patricia Laidlaw (fallecida en 1989)
* De niño asistió al Dragon School y posteriormente acudió al Eton College, acabando finalmente
en el Selwyn College, perteneciente a la Universidad de Cambridge, donde estudió Arqueología y Antropología.
* En su primer año de universidad, Laurie conoció a Emma Thompson (actriz inglesa) y además, se unió al Cambridge Footlights, el cual había sido el impulsor de exitosos comediantes británicos
desde que se creó. En ese grupo también conoció a su amigo Stephen Fry, con el que compartiría escena en múltiples ocasiones.
* En su último año en la universidad (1981) llego a ser el presidente del Footlights Club.
En 1983, junto a varios de los integrantes de Footlights Club interpretó para tv el programa "Alfresco"
* Junto con su inseparable amigo Stephen Fry protagonizó la serie de televisión Jeeves and Wooster, una adaptación de los relatos de P. G. Wodehouse sobre los personajes del mismo nombre en donde Laurie encarnaba a Bertram Wooster y Fry a su mayordomo, Jeeves; en el amable e inane papel de Bertie, Laurie tuvo ocasión de emplear su talento como pianista y cantante. Tambien protagonizaron el exitoso ciclo "A BIT OF FRY AND LAURIE"
* Laurie se diversificó como actor en varios papeles cómicos (como el de Blackadder con Rowan Atkinson como el príncipe George) compaginándolos con otros papeles de talante más serio en películas como Los amigos de Peter y Sentido y sensibilidad. Otras apariciones incluyen Maybe Baby y Stuart Little.
* En 1996 fue publicado su libro The Gun Seller, una novela de suspense con toques humorísticos, que llegó a ser best seller.
* Actualmente Laurie se encuentra trabajando en su segunda novela, The Paper Soldier.
* Si bien Hugh es un actor reconocido en Reino Unido, alcanzo el reconocimiento mundial a partir de lograr en el 2004 el papel protagónico de la serie dramática HOUSE M.D. en donde encarna a un particular y brillante medico.Por este trabajo fue nominado para el Emmy en el 2005 y resulto ganador por dos años consecutivos del premio GOLDEN GLOBE (2005 Y 2006)como "MEJOR ACTOR DE SERIE DRAMATICA"
* En su faz personal, Hugh Laurie está casado con Jo Green desde 1989 con la que tiene tres hijos: Charlie (nació en 1988), Bill (1990) y Rebbeca (1992).
* Tiene fijada su residencia en el norte de Londres aunque pasa largas temporadas en Los Ángeles debido a la serie House, M.D que se rueda allí.
* Se confiesa aficionado a las motos desde que su padre le regaló una a los 16 años y amante de la música (es pianista, guitarrista y compositor)
